Le tour du monde en 210 jours

Link: English version

aus_madrid.jpg... plus précisement, 1.6 fois autour du monde.

Anais a déjà volé 41843 miles, soit 67325 km.

Around the world in 210 days

aus_madrid.jpg ... actually, 1.6 times around the world.

Anais has already flown 41843 miles, or 67325 km. That's 1.68 times around our globe. Poor thing. And she handles it pretty well, too. Well, yeah, that's what one could call practice, right?

Anyway, I just played listing the flights she has been in: Hilo-Honolulu (5 times), Honolulu-Papeete (round trip), some miscellaneous flights in Tahiti, Honolulu-Sydney and back, Honolulu-Santiago (via Atlanta), and the longest yet, Santiago-Paris (via Madrid). The Santiago-Madrid section, non-stop, is little short of 14 hours and 6650 miles.

The worse in this is that she doesn't even get to be an elite flyer. Because -except for the HNL-STG-, she did not have a seat and thus could not accumulate miles!

She has been moderately sensitive to jetlag. Her rythm is usually messed up for 5 days to a week, with her being up till no time in the morning (the worse was 3:00AM when we came back from Australia). As a result, she is still not sleeping through the night, at 7 months. She tried and succeeded several times, but every trips would squash her courageous efforts.

Briefs

Quick news about Anaïs (she doesn't allow us much time to write up blog entries):

  • She loved Tahiti where she stayed 2 weeks with her mum & dad mid-august.
  • She now weighs over 7kg.
  • She almost can sit alone. It's a question of days now...
  • She still makes a lot of bubbles, but elevated it to a communication tool.
  • She now uses several tones for communications: Crying, of course, but also moaning, and shouting when she is not happy.
  • She is very cute and her parents are more than ever in love with her.

Anaïs' news

Image Gallery

I haven't posted anything in the past 5 days. Partly because things are settling down (everything is relative: what I mean is, compared to the rush of delivery) and partly because there is much to do. These two statements seem incompatible, but they're not. As all parents in this period, we are a bit overwhelmed by the newborn routine: Change diaper, feed her, put her to bed, start again. With every now and then a short period of awareness for the baby, during which she is with us, watching here and there stuff with bright color -mostly. We've to arrange our schedule around this, for simple activities like lunch or dinner.

So, we came back home 2 days after the delivery. The three of us have been out together only once since then, to visit Anaïs's pediatrician, Dr Wilson. She has only lost 80 grams since she was born, which is good (most babies lose way more than this). She is feeding very well. Sometimes too well -we have the feeling she's gonna burst. At night, she wakes up every 3 hours, so that's not too bad. Bottom line: the parents are enjoying every minute of it.

Here she is / la voila !

Friends,

Baby Anaïs (Gabrielle Leilani) was born this morning (May 22) at 11:39!

Labor was relatively short (for Céline's first born), and extremely well timed. We arrived at the hospital at 7:20, Céline got an epidural at around 8:30, and the baby was born at 11:39. She weighs 7lb10oz (3.450kg) and is 20inches tall (or long...she doesn't stand up yet). Céline and Anaïs are doing very well and they are both recuperating right now.

Below are some pictures of the event. The first two ones are *before*, the rest is after. Click on the image to get a large version.

Let's roll / Roulez jeunesse!

Céline has had contraction for over an hour now, every 2 and a half mn now. I just called the doctor and she is sending us to the hospital for monitoring.

The bottomline is that it seems it has started.

Nope, not yet.

Still no baby. We even went to the movies today to watch "da Vinci Code". Céline is feeling well.

Toujours pas de bébé. Suspense.

Lanfeust

Heritier

Céline just told me she felt like the Darshanid princess in Lanfeust. For those who don't know Lanfeust, here is an excerpt (click on the image to enlarge).

Translation of the comics:

  • "The heart of the child beats. He is well."
  • "I know that! But why doesn't she deliver? It's been now three years that she is due!"
  • "For forty month I have contemplated her round belly, waiting for my heir."
  • "Medicine does not have an answer for everything my lord. There are mysteries that only the gods can explain."

Baby news

We're receiving lots of calls from many of you. So I've decided to "go public" and post progress here on this blog. This way you can satisfy your curiosity and we can keep our sanity.

So at this time, no real progress. Céline is overdue by 3 days now. Baby keeps moving a lot, but does not seem to find the exit, or even to make any sign he/she wants out. So this morning we went to the hospital and did a "non-stress test" (baby's stress that is), to determine if everything was still good for the baby. It was. Heart rate between 110 and 160, baby moving often, which we were told is a sign he/she is healthy.

I will keep you guys posted. In particular, I will really try to post when we go off to the hospital.

Note: and by the way, for those really impatient, you can see pictures of the baby here.

Note: Pour les plus impatients.

High altitude medical exam

Images Within the frame of high altitude work (Gemini is at 4200m atop Mauna Kea -14000feet-), I had a full physical exam today. This included pulmonary and a 10mn treadmill test. That's basically an EKG under physical effort. They make you walk faster and faster, for 7mn and then jog for another 3mn, while monitoring you heart & blood pressure. It turns out I passed. I'm good to go for work at the summit of MK. I was a bit afraid this would not be the case, given my diabetes condition; I am much more prone to tiredness I was before, but that did not prevent me to pass the test. My pulmonary condition seems better than last time, probably a happy consequence of quitting smoking. Now if I could only get that sugar level down to normal.

World history in a can

Picture 2-6

I bought "A brief history of the human race", from Michael Cook, a week ago in the compass bookstore at the SFO airport. Quite good, especially the early and late parts (I'm 2/3 into it). I was particularly impressed by the treatment of "could history have turned out differently?". The author actually gives a convincing answer to it: No. This answer is supported by evidence; nature has concocted several experiments for us: notably, it separated several groups of humans before the start of history (the author defines history at the appearance of farming, so about 10000 years ago), and kept them isolated since then, up to the 15 century (for the America) or the 19th century (for Australia). Beside a different calendar (farming did not appear in the America before the fourth Millenium BC, and did not appear at all in Australia), which can readily be explained by the different geography/faune of the said continent, how things unfolded in America is not fundamentally different of how they happened in the rest of the world, with civilizations based on similar principles, writing, farming, markets, rulers, etc. Interesting question and answer. The book is full of similar smart insight, although sometimes it lacks of a conducting wire/idea.

Week-end in Maui

Tn Img 0938 We just spent a fantastic week-end in Maui with Andy and Cietta. I met andy at the same conference I met Céline, so some time ago now. Anyway, Andy and Cietta are now in Madison, and they rented this nice B&B in Hana, Maui, for a week, and invited us over for the week-end. That was short, but great. The road to Hana is still the same: tortuous, treacherous, winding, but really scenic. We spent the Saturday and Sunday morning with them and after that rushed back to the Kahului airport to take the Island Air flight to Hilo (via Kona). Overall a very enjoyable week-end, with lot of nice food and friends!

All the nicest pictures in our gallery.
