What's FLOSS you say?
It's Free/Libre Open Source Software. Make some research on the web if you haven't heard of it. Start with the Free Software Foundation (of which I am a member)

Anyway, the way I contribute to FLOSS:

1. I write myself some free software (GPLv3 license), within the frame of yorick, a GPL data analysis software. I am co-admin for the yorick sourceforge site, and I designed and maintain the yorick unofficial home page.

2. I maintain Ubuntu, Fedora and Mandriva repositories for yorick and its plugins (see this post in the yorick forums)

3. I test ubuntu releases. Usually, I install 3 months into the 6 months development schedule. I test various things (often using the environment for extended period), and report bugs + follow ups.

4. Little gestures: I try to leave my bittorrent open after downloading a linux liveCD to share with other people.

5. Once in a while (I haven't done it for some time), I go and browse the ubuntu forums to answer questions or give tips.

6. I report tips and workarounds, in specialized sites, like thinkwiki.

Some are small gestures, but in the FLOSS word, every little gesture can help.

Anaïs vient d'avoir un an Mardi dernier!

Anais a déjà volé 41843 miles, soit 67325
km.

Hilo-Honolulu (5 fois), Honolulu-Papeete (aller-retour), quelques

... actually, 1.6 times around the world.

Anais has already flown 41843 miles, or 67325 km. That's 1.68 times
around our globe. Poor thing. And she handles it pretty well,
too. Well, yeah, that's what one could call practice, right?

Anyway, I just played listing the flights she has been in:
Hilo-Honolulu (5 times), Honolulu-Papeete (round trip), some miscellaneous
flights in Tahiti, Honolulu-Sydney and back, Honolulu-Santiago (via
Atlanta), and the longest yet, Santiago-Paris (via Madrid). The
Santiago-Madrid section, non-stop, is little short of 14 hours and
6650 miles.

The worse in this is that she doesn't even get to be an elite
flyer. Because -except for the HNL-STG-, she did not have a seat and
thus could not accumulate miles!

She has been moderately sensitive to jetlag. Her rythm is usually
messed up for 5 days to a week, with her being up till no time in the
morning (the worse was 3:00AM when we came back from Australia). As a
result, she is still not sleeping through the night, at 7 months. She
tried and succeeded several times, but every trips would squash her
courageous efforts.

Link: English version

G'day mate.

Link: version francaise

After coming back from Tahiti, we looked into the next destination. I advocated Greece, but Celine convinced me that Australia was a better option. We found a reasonable air ticket and a good housing deal: a nice and very original little house in the middle of Surry Hill, one of the hippest quarter of Sydney. Australia is great. We loved Sydney, where we stayed 3 weeks. Plenty of time to discover the city, even though Anaïs imposed a fairly restrictive schedule on us. But we were ready for it, and this went well with the secondary purpose of these vacations: get some rest. So we were rarely out before noon, and never back after six. We saw the Sydney city, Opera House (from the outside and the inside), Circular Quay, the Taronga zoo, the Rocks, did some shopping, saw the Sydney tower, the Australian Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of New South Wales, the Sydney cathedral, the Marine Museum, Darling Harbour, the Aquarium, the new Wildlife center, did some more shopping, went to a few restaurants, and so on... There's a companion page here with the best pictures from our trip.

Food wise, Sydney is a paradise. At least, when coming from the US. Food is generally excellent, tasty, and varied. We had western food, but also Italian, Thai, Indian, Mediterranean and Nepalese food. Restaurants are on the expensive side, though, as many things in Sydney -somewhat more expensive than Hawaii, which is already considered as one of the most expensive states in the US. Another goodies: you won't find garlic in every other plate, which is a blessing when you're French and coming from the US, where garlic is way overused.

Other reasons to love Australia include: people are *really* nice; they are environment friendly (unlike hawaii, they recycle); they use the metric system; and they spell harbour correctly. On the other hand, they have freaking gigantic spiders. And snakes. Some of the most venomous things on earth. Ugh.

Originally, we wanted to rent a motorhome (camping car) during the second half of our trip. We eventually decided against this, and extended our stay in town. However, we still wanted to go out a bit and see the countryside. So we rented a car and spent four days in the blue mountains, a mountain range a couple of hours off Sydney. That was great too. We visited the Jenolan caves, a "cool" extension of the Sydney Botanical Gardens, and walked along and below the rim of the high cliffs of the Jameson valley (a sort of grand Canyon, but 5 times smaller). We spotted a couple of kangaroos (alive) and 6 or 7 wombats (dead on the side of the road), and a dragon (sort of big spiky lizard). There are pictures of these -except the dead wombats- on our Sydney photo gallery.

Anaïs loved the trip. We stayed at the house in Sydney a few times throughout the day, thinking that a bit of rest would do her some good, but each time she was fussy during the day, complaining, and we had to go out -even briefly- to soothe her. She has seen as much of Sydney as us, as most of the time I (Francois) carried her in the baby carrier, facing forward. She was very attentive and tried to charm all the passersby. We have been regularly stopped by people who wanted to tell us how beautiful she was. That was kinda flattering for me (Francois) as she attracted mostly female eyes, and I got to hear many women exclaiming "how cute!" while looking at me.

G'day mate.

For the Anaïs aficionados (i.e. mostly the close family): here are two little movies (Anaïs speaking and laughing).
We just spent 2 weeks in Tahiti. A wonderful experience. We kinda decided at the last minute. We chose to spend one week in luxurious hotels (4 nights in Moorea and 2 in Bora Bora) and the next in a small, cosy pension (like B&B) in the neighborhood of Papeete. Everything was great. The highlight of our stay was an afternoon snorkeling with Black tip sharks and sting rays at Bora bora. I have put some pictures in our gallery for your browsing pleasure. I am attaching a few more below for immediate perusal.

Quick news about Anaïs (she doesn't allow us much time to write up blog entries):

She loved Tahiti where she stayed 2 weeks with her mum & dad mid-august.

She now weighs over 7kg.

She almost can sit alone. It's a question of days now...

She still makes a lot of bubbles, but elevated it to a communication tool.

She now uses several tones for communications: Crying, of course, but also moaning, and shouting when she is not happy.

She is very cute and her parents are more than ever in love with her.

Car. big faces of adults kissing me and speaking funny. Good milk from mummy. laugh. Dance. Again. Like to be in people's arms. Like mummy. Funny. like papa. and mummy's mother, and sisters. Funny too. Like to be with my stuffed animals. Big blue person shot me in the leg now, surprise and pain. cry. cry. car. sleep. Better. laugh. fart."

It's been more than 2 months since the last entry, and, even though we received many requests for more blog news (some sounded like threats), we obviously did not find the time to do it until now. But enough with the excuses, let's get to the facts.

We had the visit of many family members: Fanette, Céline's mother, arrived June 1rst, and stayed with us for 2 months (she left last Thursday). Pierre & Yanie, Céline's father and step-mother, spent a week early June, and at the same time we had the surprise-visit of Marc (Céline's brother) and girlfriend Laura. Anaïs's sisters, Natacha and Camille, came to meet the new addition in the family, and stayed with us for the entire month of July (they left last Thursday with Fanette).

Of course, Anaïs has changed a lot in 2 months: The most remarkable thing is that she is growing, well... like a flower in Hawaii: fast and nice. We went to the pediatrician a week ago: She is in the 90th percentile in size and around 98th percentile in weight. She weighs as much as the average 5 month baby! Other progress include:

She can almost hold her head upright

She smiles and laugh a lot

She talks in many "areuh"

She mouthes her fingers, and especially her right thumb (when she can find it)

She sleeps 7 hours straight at night most of the time (last night 8 and a half hours), to the great relief of her breast-feeding mother

she now naps only a couple of times a day

She stares at the ceiling fans with delight

She loves dancing on any kind of music

She went to the restaurant, swimming-pool, starbucks (several times...), to the beach, and hot ponds

She cries very little

She had her second round of vaccinations last week (first was right after she was born)

I haven't posted anything in the past 5 days. Partly because things are settling down (everything is relative: what I mean is, compared to the rush of delivery) and partly because there is much to do. These two statements seem incompatible, but they're not. As all parents in this period, we are a bit overwhelmed by the newborn routine: Change diaper, feed her, put her to bed, start again. With every now and then a short period of awareness for the baby, during which she is with us, watching here and there stuff with bright color -mostly. We've to arrange our schedule around this, for simple activities like lunch or dinner.

So, we came back home 2 days after the delivery. The three of us have been out together only once since then, to visit Anaïs's pediatrician, Dr Wilson. She has only lost 80 grams since she was born, which is good (most babies lose way more than this). She is feeding very well. Sometimes too well -we have the feeling she's gonna burst. At night, she wakes up every 3 hours, so that's not too bad. Bottom line: the parents are enjoying every minute of it.

Friends,

Baby Anaïs (Gabrielle Leilani) was born this morning (May 22) at 11:39!

Labor was relatively short (for Céline's first born), and extremely well timed. We arrived at the hospital at 7:20, Céline got an epidural at around 8:30, and the baby was born at 11:39. She weighs 7lb10oz (3.450kg) and is 20inches tall (or long...she doesn't stand up yet). Céline and Anaïs are doing very well and they are both recuperating right now.

Below are some pictures of the event. The first two ones are *before*, the rest is after. Click on the image to get a large version.
